The Roland Garros Tournament (Internationaux de France, French Open or French Open) is a tennis tournament held in Paris, France. It is named after Roland Garros, a French aviation pioneer.
With the Australian Open, the Wimbledon Tournament and the US Open, the Roland Garros tournament makes up the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments. It is played on clay courts, in the best of 5 sets for men and 3 sets for women. In 1968, the Roland Garros tournament was the first Grand Slam tournament to be "open", allowing both amateurs and professionals to participate.
It is the main tournament held on clay in the world and the second in chronological order of the Grand Slams after the Australian Open. It is also the predecessor of the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open and the only one of the four major tournaments held on this surface.
